THE SUFFOLK REGIMENT O.C.A. STOWMARKET 1685 Raised by Henry Howard 7th Duke of Norfolk, to fight off a rebellion by the Duke of Monmouth in his attempt to take the Crown. 1689-91 Service in Ireland, including the Battle of the Boyne. 1694-97 In the Low Countries. 1703-19 Served in the West Indies, the Low Countries, Spain and Minorca. 1743 Embarked for Flanders and on into Germany. The Battle of Dettingen, the first battle honour for the regiment. The crown was added to the standard because it was the last time a British Monarch lead the army into battle. 1745 The Regiment suffered heavy casualties at the battle of Fonte­noy 1751 Became the 12th of foot; prior to this the regiment was named after its Colonel.  Yellow was added to regimental colours 1759       After service in England, Holland and Minorca, moved again to Germany and took part in the Battle of Minden, which is still commemorated by the wearing of roses on August 1st, the anniversary of the battle. 1769 Embarked for Gibraltar and was part of the garrison for the great siege 1779—83. For services in the siege the Regiment took the arms of Gibraltar as its crest and the Castle and Key were part of the cap badge and colours from then on. This remains as part of the Royal Anglian Regiment badge today. 1783 The county title of "East Suffolk" was added to become 12th (East Suffolk) Regiment. 1797      Arrived in India and served there and Mauritius until 1817. 1799      The battle of Seringapatam. 1851 Reserve Battalion posted to South Africa for service in the Kaffir War. 1852      Wreck of the Troopship ‘Birkenhead’ 1854-59 1st Battalion served in Australia dealing with troubles in the goldfields. 1860-67 The battalion took part in the Maori War in New Zealand. 1879-81 The 1st Battalion fought in Afghanistan-the third Afghan War. 1881 The Regiment became the Suffolk Regiment. 1899-1902 The 1st Battalion served in the Boer war. 1914-18 The Great War- Battalions served in France and Flanders, Macedonia, Gallipoli and Palestine. The Regiment lost 6,873 officers and men during World War 1. 1939 2nd Battalion were on active service on the North-West Frontier. 1939-45 World War 2, Battalions served in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Italy, Burma and North Africa. Four Territorial Battalions were captured at Singapore (two Suffolk and two Cambridgeshire. 1946-48 1st Battalion in Palestine 1948 2nd Battalion amalgamated with the 1st Battalion. 1949-53 1st Battalion in operations against terrorists in Malaya. 1956-59 1st Battalion in Cyprus. August 29th 1959 The Regiment amalgamated with the Royal Norfolk Regiment to become the 1st East Anglian Regiment (Royal Norfolk and Suffolk).
